Bach Moc peak, standing at an impressive height of 3,046 meters, ranks as the fourth tallest mountain in Vietnam. It is situated along the natural border that separates the provinces of Lai Chau and Lao Cai. This location is renowned among mountaineering enthusiasts for its breathtaking beauty.
The area is famously referred to as “dawn in the clouds,” highlighting its picturesque sunrises above the mist. Starting on an expedition to the summit of Ky Quan San, which stands at an impressive elevation of 3046 meters in Sang Ma Sao, Bat Xat district of Lao Cai province, promises to be a demanding yet rewarding adventure over a span of three days and four nights. As you traverse the rugged 28 kilometers of mountain trails and forest paths, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the cloud sea atop Muoi Hill, while also relishing the invigorating freshness of nearby streams.
The journey primarily involves navigating through forested areas and alongside bubbling streams, with some sections requiring careful maneuvering around steep cliffs. Nevertheless, you’ll have the unique opportunity to spend a night in a shelter located at an altitude of 2100 meters. This facility, constructed by local ethnic communities, is equipped with essential amenities designed to ensure your comfort and aid in your recovery after a day of trekking.

Day 0: Hanoi – Sapa
21:30: The sleeper bus will collect you at 5 Tran Nguyen Han heading to Sapa, Lao Cai. The trip to Sapa lasts approximately 6 hours. You will be dropped off at 436 Dien Bien Phu, Sapa.
Board the comfortable sleeper bus and leave for Sapa early the next morning. The highway journey is very smooth, so you can relax and focus on your upcoming climbing adventure!
Day 1: Sapa – Sang Ma Sao – Rest Shack
05:00: Arrive at the bus station located at 426 Dien Bin Phu, Sapa Town, then walk to our office at 09 Thac Bac, Sapa Town (a 15-20 minute walk; I suggest taking a taxi which takes about 5 minutes).
07:00: Enjoy breakfast featuring Vietnamese Pho.
07:30: A bus will pick you up to take you to Ky Quan San village for the start of your challenging trek. (~60km from Sapa, with a travel time of over 1 hour and 30 minutes through the pass)
08:30: Upon arriving at the village, we will assist you in organizing your belongings and getting ready for an exciting climbing adventure.
12:00: Lunch at a shelter before entering the forest.
17:00: Reach the resting area at an elevation of 2100m. We will start a fire and prepare rice right on the mountain.
Note:
- Trekking duration is approximately 7-8 hours. The trail includes many steep sections and few streams, making it slippery when wet.
- You will spend the night in a hut built by local ethnic people, equipped with blankets and toilets for your comfort before attempting to reach the summit the following day.
Day 2: Shack – Peak – Shack
05:30: Wake up and put on warm clothes to greet the dawn at the famous sea of clouds and hills. Afterwards, return to the hut to freshen up and eat breakfast.
07:30: Leave belongings at the hut, take water and raincoats, and continue hiking to the summit.
11:30: Reach the peak of Ky Quan San. Take photos at the summit and celebrate with songs. Then enjoy lunch at the top with delicious fried rice balls.
12:00: Head back down to the 2100m checkpoint.
16:00: Arrive at the previous resting spot. Let’s grill chicken together by the fire while enjoying the coolness of the jungle at sunset.
Day 3: Rest – Sapa – Hanoi
05:30: Rise early to greet the sunrise at Salt Hill once more.
07:00: Enjoy breakfast, pack your belongings and head back along the original route. Have lunch during the descent.
13:00: Upon exiting the forest gate, the guide will arrange a motorbike taxi to transport you to the vehicle pickup location.
14:00: Board the 16-seat van for the journey back to Sapa (50km away, taking approximately 2 hours).
17:00: Arrive in Sapa.
22:00: You will need to walk to the bus office located at 426 Dien Bien Phu, Sapa Town (or take a taxi) to board the sleeper bus returning to Hanoi (5 Tran Nguyen Han). This concludes the program.
